We have grown to become the most important networking platform for financiers of Hellenic origin working abroad

The Hellenic Bankers Association UK was founded in 1994 to promote closer cooperation among bankers and financial professionals of Hellenic origin based in the United Kingdom.

Our network reflects professionalism, model corporate citizenship, and hard-work ethics. Since our inception, we have grown to become the most important networking platform for Greeks and Cypriots working in Europe’s financial capital and play a pivotal role as gateway between London’s financial centre and the Greek political, economic and business community. Our goal is to support the Greek economy as well as boost entrepreneurship. Our members’ active participation in transnational economic and business activities, as well as their position at the forefront of industry developments are proofs of our passion and commitment.

In recent years we have hosted a series of events with leading figures in economics, business, and politics, among others featuring Petros Doukas, Spyros Capralos, Philippos Kosteletos, Andreas Vgenopoulos, Takis Arapoglou, George Alogoskoufis, Nikos Christodoulakis, Stefanos Manos, Apostolos Tamvakakis, George Papakonstantinou and Yannis Stournaras.

The Challenges Overcome

The founding committee found early on many challenges, namely the need to bring together and leading a handful of equally committed individuals that were also prepared to work hard, devote time and effort to prepare from scratch, all that it was needed to present a credible proposition for the establishment of a Hellenic Bankers Association.

Welcome speech by George MATSAKAS (Chairman)

They immediately faced the need to identify the growing number of Bankers of Greek origin as potential members and reach out to establish the first network. Last of all, there was even greater need in convincing our compatriot colleagues in the UK that we genuinely wished to bring together Bankers of similar background and roots often working for competing institutions and ultimately to strike a delicate balance of maintaining a transparent and fair organisation, in a highly competitive industry.

The rest, as they say, is history, but the founding principles still live on in the HBA-UK today.
